Before World War I, as the steel industry boomed in Youngstown, many Slovak immigrants settled in the Steelton area of west Youngstown. In 1914, they proposed a Catholic parish dedicated to the Holy Name of Jesus. under the leadership of John Roth, Matthias Kucko. Martin Dolak, Joseph Lipjanec, Joseph Bolha, Michael Novotny, and Stepehn Saluga began collecting independently for what was to be the Holy Name of Jesus Parish of Youngstown, Ohio. At this point it is interesting to note that the first meeting of the Steelton district was held in January of 1914 at the home of Joseph Sopkovic. The first collection (house to house) amounted to the grand sum, at that time, of $98.25. Various collections were taken up month after month, until, with the aid of a loan from John Kaemar, Sr. of $250, the land upon which the present church and rectory stand was purchased from the Carnegie Steel Company for the sum of $2,000. This land, consisting of eight lots, and in all 250 x 225 feet, on North Lakeview Avenue and extending from Midland Avenue to Florence Avenue, was purchased in August 1914. Under the guidance of the first pastor, Rev. John Stipanovic, a Croatian priest who knew Slovak, ground was broken in late 1916 for the church and the rectory. A large hall on the corner of Midland and Salt Springs Road was used for a meeting place. Fr. Stipanovic was called to serve the Croatians of SS Peter and Paul on December 7, 1917 so the first Mass celebrated on Christmas Day 1917 in the basement of the new church by the new pastor, Father Francis J. Dubosh. The church was completed in May 1918 and was dedicated on June 2, 1918. In 1920 a school was opened for the parish children under the auspices of the Ursuline nuns. The new church and rectory together with the equipment cost in the vicinity of $85,008. All but S10,000 was paid during the pastorate of Fr. Stipanovlc and Fr. Dubosh. In 1922, Father Dubosh was appointed pastor of SS Cyril and Methodius Church in Cleveland, Ohio and Father Stephan G. Kocis, a son of Holy Trinity Parish, was named the third pastor as the third Pastor of Holy Name of Jesus Church. Under his direction, the original debt was paid, and in 1926 ground was broken for the construction of a new school. The 42-classroom school was completed and dedicated in I927. Under Fr. Kocis, the church were extensively remodeled and expanded. In 1940, Father Kocis was elevated to Monsignor and he served the parish until his death in 1952. Msgr. Stephen Begalla was named the fourth pastor of Holy Name. He completed the remodeling and brought the project to a speedy completion and the debt was quickly eliminated. Upon Msgr. Begalla's retirement, Father George M. Franko, who was Assistant Pastor from 1951 until 1963 was assigned as Pastor of Holy Name of Jesus Parish on July 1, 1968. After Father Franko's retirement in 1989, Father Michael Ronik, who served served as Assistant Pastor from 1957 to 1966, was appointed as the fourth pastor of Holy Name. He served the parish until his health necessitated his retirement in 2001 when Father John E. Reiss was appointed pastor. Fr. Reiss was followed by Msgr. Peter Polando who became the parish administrator andsaw the merger of the three parishes under Our Lady of Sorrows and now Fr. Martin Celuch has been pastor since 2013.
